Microsoft Teams device troubleshooting

Microsoft Teams Microphone Not Working

Test the microphone outside Teams, then isolate Teams device selection, browser/app permission, OS privacy controls or organization policy.

Evidence first

What the independent test changes

If DeviceOK passes

If DeviceOK receives audio, the microphone hardware path is working at browser level; Teams selection, permission or policy is the higher-value next check.

If DeviceOK fails

If DeviceOK receives no audio, first check connection, mute, OS privacy controls and device detection.

Safe sequence

Check these in order

  1. 1

Run DeviceOK Microphone Test and confirm input is present.

  2. 2

In Teams, select the intended microphone and confirm you are not muted.

  3. 3

For Teams on the web, allow microphone access in both Teams/app permissions and the browser.

  4. 4

If permissions are managed by your organization, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly reinstalling hardware.

Verify

Retest instead of guessing

After changing one setting, run the independent DeviceOK test again before moving to a more invasive step. This preserves evidence and avoids changing multiple variables at once.
