Check buttons, stick center, drift, dead zones, triggers and analog range on a used controller before purchase or repair sign-off.
Controller faults are analog as well as digital. A button can work while a stick jitters, a trigger clips early or wireless behavior fails. Record neutral position, full range and both connection modes you intend to use.

Inspect for cracked shells, loose sticks, sticky buttons, worn rubber and signs of heavy modification/opening.
Why it matters: Mechanical wear often explains inconsistent input that is hard to see from one button press.Test a known-good data-capable cable and gently check for disconnects when the plug is touched normally.
Why it matters: Charge-only cables and worn ports can masquerade as controller/driver faults.Pair using the platform's supported method and use it long enough to catch immediate drops or severe latency.
Why it matters: USB success does not prove the Bluetooth/proprietary radio path.Confirm the controller accepts charge or batteries normally and does not become unusually hot.
Why it matters: Browser Gamepad data does not reveal battery-cell health.Test paddles, profile buttons, headset jack and advanced feedback only if the controller/model supports them and they matter to you.
Why it matters: Advanced features are not consistently exposed by browsers.Conditions that deserve caution
- Stick value will not settle near center after recalibration/reconnection.
- A required trigger/button repeatedly misses or chatters.
- USB port disconnects under normal plug movement with a known-good cable.
- Battery swelling or abnormal heat is present.
How to use the evidence
A repeatable analog defect matters more than a cosmetic mark. Compare both sticks/triggers and retest after reconnecting before deciding whether the fault is hardware, mapping or connection mode.
