Test the playback path and microphone separately. A headset can have good speakers with a failed boom mic, or work over analog while the USB/Bluetooth electronics are faulty.

Headband, hinges, pads and cable

Flex only through normal travel; inspect strain reliefs, swivels, pads and detachable connectors for cracks or intermittent contact.

Why it matters: Mechanical wear commonly causes future cable or channel failures.

Every connection mode you need

Test USB, 3.5 mm, dongle and/or Bluetooth separately when the model supports them.

Why it matters: Each mode may use different electronics and routing.

Mute, volume and boom controls

Operate inline/on-headset controls repeatedly and confirm the host/app reflects the change where appropriate.

Why it matters: A broken mute switch can look like a dead microphone.

Wireless battery/charging path

Confirm charging and reasonable short-session stability; use the maker's app for battery health/status if provided.

Why it matters: A browser cannot certify battery condition.

Physical noise and channel intermittency

Move the cable/hinges normally while listening at safe volume; note crackles or channel dropouts.

Why it matters: Intermittent conductors may pass a stationary test.

Conditions that deserve caution

  • Battery swelling, odor or abnormal heat.
  • One channel or microphone repeatedly drops with normal connector movement.
  • Required connection mode cannot be made stable with known-good host/cable/dongle.
