Used and refurbished iPhone buyers

Used iPhone Check

Check the browser-visible parts of a used iPhone, then record the protected ownership, charging, battery and cellular checks that must be verified before payment.

Inspection principle

A used iPhone can pass browser camera, microphone, speaker, touch and display checks while still having battery, cellular, charging, Face ID/Touch ID or ownership problems. Treat protected device state as part of the purchase decision.

Run the browser-visible checks, then record the physical/native checks below. Progress stays in this browser unless you deliberately copy the fragment share link.

Physical & native checks

These close the blind spots a website cannot inspect.

1
Model, serial and IMEI

In Settings, verify the model/serial/IMEI information is coherent with the device being sold; do not publish those identifiers in a public report.

Why it matters: Identity and ownership state are not browser-testable.
2
Activation Lock and account removal

Before payment, have the seller remove their Apple Account/Find My association and confirm the phone can reach the expected transfer/setup state.

Why it matters: A technically healthy phone can still be unusable if ownership lock remains.
3
Battery health and service state

Use Settings > Battery and Apple's current diagnostic/support path to review maximum capacity/service messages where available.

Why it matters: A browser battery percentage does not certify battery health.
4
USB-C/Lightning and wireless charging

Use known-good compatible charging equipment and verify stable charging; inspect the port for damage/debris without inserting metal tools.

Why it matters: Intermittent charging can be a port, cable, charger or board problem.
5
SIM/eSIM and cellular registration

Where practical, verify the intended SIM/eSIM path can register and place/use service before ownership changes.

Why it matters: Wi-Fi success does not prove cellular hardware, carrier compatibility or lock state.
6
Face ID / Touch ID

Use the native setup/unlock flow to verify the biometric system if the model supports it.

Why it matters: Browser code cannot validate Apple's protected biometric hardware.

Conditions that deserve caution

  • Activation Lock/account ownership cannot be removed before handover.
  • Battery/enclosure is swollen, separating, unusually hot or damaged.
  • Charging cuts in and out with known-good compatible equipment.
  • Cellular/IMEI state is inconsistent with what the seller claims.
Decision rule

How to use the evidence

A clean screen and camera test is not enough. Do not complete the purchase until ownership, charging, battery and cellular state are also acceptable.

  • Use Apple's current Settings, diagnostics and support flows for battery, parts/service history, Face ID/Touch ID and ownership state.
