Used Laptop Check
Inspect the browser-testable parts of a used laptop before buying or accepting it.
A browser can prove that many input/output paths work now; it cannot prove battery-cell health, SSD SMART state, liquid history or board-level reliability. Combine repeatable live tests with a physical and native-OS inspection.
Run the browser-visible checks, then record the physical/native checks below. Progress stays in this browser unless you deliberately copy the fragment share link.
Browser-visible checks
Physical & native checks
These close the blind spots a website cannot inspect.
Open and close the lid slowly, look along the chassis for bowing, and inspect screws/feet for missing parts or obvious prior opening.
Why it matters: Hinge resistance, bent frames and disturbed fasteners can reveal mechanical damage that a browser test cannot see. With known-good accessories, gently test the charging port and the USB/HDMI/headphone ports you expect to use. Avoid forcing loose or damaged connectors.
Why it matters: A laptop can pass keyboard/camera tests while still having an expensive port or daughterboard fault. If the seller permits it, shut the laptop down fully, start it from cold, connect/disconnect the charger once, and watch for unexpected shutdowns or charge interruptions.
Why it matters: Cold-start and power-path faults may not appear during a short browser session.Use the operating system or manufacturer diagnostic to inspect battery condition/cycle information where supported; do not rely on a browser battery percentage as health evidence.
Why it matters: Browser battery APIs do not expose cell health or remaining design capacity reliably.Confirm the advertised storage capacity in the OS and use the manufacturer/OS health tool when available.
Why it matters: DeviceOK cannot read SSD SMART or protected storage diagnostics from an ordinary webpage.Match the physical model/serial shown by the OS with the chassis label where applicable and verify the device is not still tied to an activation/management lock before payment.
Why it matters: A technically working laptop can still be unusable to a buyer if ownership or management state is unresolved.Conditions that deserve caution
- Seller will not allow a restart or basic hardware check.
- Swollen/bulging chassis, battery odor, heat damage or liquid residue is visible.
- Charging cuts in and out with a known-good compatible charger.
- Activation/organization-management state cannot be cleared before ownership changes.
How to use the evidence
Treat one repeatable failure as a lead, not a verdict. Reproduce it with a known-good cable/accessory or native diagnostic. Price the device only after the failed subsystem and repair boundary are clear.
- Windows: review battery/storage/device status with Windows and the OEM diagnostic.
- Mac: run Apple Diagnostics and verify Activation Lock/Find My ownership state before handover.
