Chassis, hinge and liquid clues

Inspect the enclosure, display edge, hinge travel, screws and ports for bending, separation, corrosion or residue.

Why it matters: Mechanical/liquid history can matter even when current browser tests pass.

Every port you need

Use known-good compatible USB-C/Thunderbolt, MagSafe, HDMI, SD and headphone devices as applicable to the exact model.

Why it matters: One working port does not prove every controller/connector path.

Battery condition and cycle count

Use macOS System Information/Settings and Apple's diagnostic guidance to review battery condition and cycle information.

Why it matters: Web pages do not have authoritative access to Mac battery health.

Storage capacity and native health

Confirm the advertised internal capacity and use macOS/Apple diagnostics for protected storage state.

Why it matters: DeviceOK cannot read protected SSD health telemetry.

Activation Lock and management

Confirm Find My/Activation Lock is removed and check whether organization/device management remains before payment.

Why it matters: Ownership/MDM state can make otherwise good hardware unsuitable.

Cold boot, sleep and charging

Restart from a full shutdown, test sleep/wake once and verify stable charging with a compatible adapter.

Why it matters: Power-management faults can hide during a short warm session.
Stop / escalate

Conditions that deserve caution

  • Activation Lock or organization management cannot be removed.
  • Battery swelling, enclosure separation, liquid residue or abnormal heat is present.
  • Required port or charging failure reproduces with known-good compatible hardware.
  • Apple Diagnostics reports a hardware reference code that has not been explained/accepted in the price.
