Check basic online reachability and network stability, then record the physical ports, reset/ownership state, power supply and expected radio/Ethernet capabilities before buying a used router or access point.

Inspection principle

A browser can show whether your current connection is online and whether latency/jitter is unstable, but it cannot prove every router radio, Ethernet port, PoE state, firmware setting or ownership/cloud lock.

Match the model/revision on the chassis with the management interface and the capabilities you intend to buy.

Why it matters: Router names are reused across revisions with different radios/ports.

Factory reset and ownership

Confirm the device can be reset and claimed/managed by the new owner before payment.

Why it matters: Cloud-managed gear can remain tied to an account/site.

Every required Ethernet port

Test WAN/LAN/multi-gig/PoE ports with known-good compatible equipment as applicable.

Why it matters: One working LAN port does not prove the advertised high-speed or PoE port.

2.4/5/6 GHz bands

Verify the bands the exact model advertises can be enabled/seen with compatible clients and local regulatory settings.

Why it matters: A basic online test cannot prove every radio chain.

Correct power supply or PoE

Confirm the power adapter/PoE requirement matches the model and the device remains stable through reboot/load.

Why it matters: Underspecified power can cause resets or disabled features.

Current supported firmware path

Open the manufacturer management interface/app and verify the device can update normally and is not blocked by account/support state.

Why it matters: Security/support lifecycle matters for network equipment.

  • Device cannot be factory-reset/claimed by the buyer.
  • A required WAN/LAN/PoE/multi-gig port fails with known-good compatible gear.
  • Unexpected rebooting or overheating repeats with the correct power source.
  • The model is outside the security/support lifecycle you are willing to accept.

Treat browser latency/jitter as evidence from one client path, not a certification of the router. Verify ownership, power, ports, radios and firmware separately.
