Microphone Clipping or Distorting

Use a live DeviceOK microphone test first so you can separate a browser/app configuration problem from a wider device problem when speech peaks are distorted or clipped.

Start with evidence

speech peaks are distorted or clipped

If the live test passes, the investigation can usually move away from total hardware failure and toward the affected app, permissions, routing or configuration.

Quick checks

Try the simple causes first

  1. 1

Run the DeviceOK microphone test and note whether the microphone is detected and whether live input appears.

  2. 2

Confirm the intended microphone is selected and any physical mute control is off.

  3. 3

Check the cable, USB port, Bluetooth connection, or headset connector as applicable.

Diagnostic sequence

Work through the problem in order

  1. 1

Run the DeviceOK microphone test and note whether the microphone is detected and whether live input appears.

  2. 2

Confirm the intended microphone is selected and any physical mute control is off.

  3. 3

Check the cable, USB port, Bluetooth connection, or headset connector as applicable.

  4. 4

Check browser and operating-system microphone permissions.

  5. 5

Try the microphone in one other trusted app to separate an app-specific problem from a device-wide problem.

  6. 6

If the microphone still fails everywhere, use the manufacturer's official driver/firmware/support path before considering hardware failure.

If it works in DeviceOK

If the microphone passes the DeviceOK test, prioritize the affected application, permissions, routing, or configuration before assuming the hardware is dead.

If it also fails in DeviceOK

If the microphone also fails in DeviceOK and another trusted app, broaden the diagnosis to connection, OS settings, drivers/firmware, and then possible hardware failure.
