printer troubleshooting

Printer Output Quality Is Poor

Use DeviceOK reference pages to identify whether the problem is color, grayscale, alignment, text sharpness, margins, or a document-specific setting.

Start with evidence

printed output is faded, blurry, uneven, incorrectly scaled, or otherwise poor

If the live test passes, the investigation can usually move away from total hardware failure and toward the affected app, permissions, routing or configuration.

Quick checks

Try the simple causes first

  1. 1

Choose the DeviceOK print test closest to the visible defect.

  2. 2

Print using the correct paper size and a normal/default quality setting.

  3. 3

Compare the result with the printer's own built-in diagnostic page if available.

Diagnostic sequence

Work through the problem in order

  1. 1

Print a controlled DeviceOK reference that isolates the visible problem.

  2. 2

Confirm media, paper size, print quality, scale, and orientation.

  3. 3

Check consumable status and use the manufacturer's own print-quality/maintenance diagnostic.

  4. 4

Compare a second independent document to rule out a file-specific problem.

  5. 5

If the same defect persists across independent references, follow the manufacturer's official model-specific support path.

If it works in DeviceOK

If DeviceOK reference pages print correctly, the printer can produce a clean controlled output; focus on the original application, file, preset, color profile, or scaling.

If it also fails in DeviceOK

If several controlled references show the same defect, a printer-side consumable, calibration, media, maintenance, or hardware cause becomes more likely.
