the webcam image is soft, blurry or repeatedly hunts for focus
Blur can come from focus, lens contamination, protective film, resolution/scaling or low light—not just sensor failure.
Do not jump to the most invasive fix
Do not use software sharpening as proof the camera is healthy; first check the optical and capture conditions.
Retest the same condition
A successful retest shows repeatably sharper detail at an appropriate focus distance and active resolution.
Rule out the simple causes
- 1
Clean the lens gently using the manufacturer's safe cleaning guidance.
- 2
Use DeviceOK Camera Focus Test Chart in good, even lighting and compare the live preview.
- 3
Move to a normal webcam working distance and remove anything that may block autofocus.
Work through the problem in order
- 1
If the focus chart becomes sharp in DeviceOK but not in one app, inspect that app's resolution/virtual-background/video settings.
- 2
If autofocus repeatedly hunts, improve lighting and check the manufacturer's camera settings utility for focus controls where supported.
- 3
If every app remains blurred at multiple distances after cleaning/settings checks, use the manufacturer's support path before replacing the webcam.
A sharp DeviceOK preview/focus target makes a completely failed lens/focus path less likely and moves the investigation toward the affected app or its capture settings.
Persistent blur in a clean, well-lit DeviceOK preview and another trusted camera app warrants model-specific manufacturer troubleshooting.
