What to establish first
- 1
Check System Settings → Privacy & Security for camera/microphone access when media tests are blocked.
- 2
Compare Safari/Chrome behavior if the symptom appears browser-specific.
- 3
Use Apple Diagnostics for suspected internal hardware faults rather than third-party driver-download sites.
Useful browser evidence on macOS
Microphone TestCheck whether your browser can detect your microphone and receive live audio.
→Webcam TestOpen your webcam locally to verify that the browser can access and display a live camera stream.
→Keyboard TestPress keys and verify that the browser receives the expected keyboard events.
→Left Right Speaker TestPlay left and right channel tones separately.
→Screen Share TestVerify that your browser can open the screen/window/tab sharing picker and start a local capture stream.
→What not to infer
- Web tests cannot replace Apple Diagnostics for logic-board, memory or other internal hardware.
- Screen recording/capture permission can be separate from camera/microphone access.
- Some browser hardware APIs available in Chromium are not exposed in Safari.
